Home Chemistry Organic Building Blocks Sulfones 1-(Methylsulfonyl)-3-Nitrobenzene
These compounds have the same murcko framework: benzene, and at least 2 kinds of functional groups( —SO2CH3,—NO2).
Aromatic Substitution: Like other aromatic compounds, (methylsulfonyl)benzene can undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. For example, it can react with strong electrophiles such as nitronium ions (NO2+) to introduce substituents onto the benzene ring. The sulfonyl group is generally not directly involved in these reactions.
Reduction: The nitro group in nitrobenzene can be reduced to an amino group (-NH2) using reducing agents like iron and hydrochloric acid, or more commonly, using catalytic hydrogenation. This reaction produces aniline.
