Amidines are organic compounds that contain the functional group RC(NR)NR2, where the R groups may be identical or distinct. They are imine derivatives of amides (RC(O)NR2). The simplest amidine, known as formamidine, is represented by the formula HC(=NH)NH2.
Amidines exhibit significantly higher basicity compared to amides, making them one of the most potent uncharged/unionized bases.
Amidines are capable of forming complexes with a wide range of transition metals, including all first-row transition metals.
