Home Life Science Biochemical Reagents
A reagent or analytical reagent refers to a substance or compound introduced into a system to induce a biochemical reaction or determine if such a reaction takes place. While the terms reactant and reagent are frequently used interchangeably, reactant specifically denotes a substance that is utilized during a chemical reaction. Solvents, despite their involvement in the reaction mechanism, are typically not referred to as reactants. Likewise, catalysts, as they are not depleted by the reaction, do not qualify as reactants. In the realm of biochemistry, particularly in the context of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, the substances undergoing the reaction are commonly referred to as substrates.
