Guanidine, which has the chemical formula HNC(NH2)2, is a colorless solid that can dissolve in polar solvents. As a potent base, it finds applications in the manufacturing of plastics and explosives.
The guanidine group is also present in larger organic compounds, such as in the side chain of arginine.
Guanidine is a nitrogenous compound that shares structural similarities with carbonic acid, where the C=O group is substituted by a C=NH group and each OH group is replaced by a NH2 group.
At physiological pH, guanidine is present in solution in its protonated form known as guanidinium.
