Ferrocenyl moieties are commonly utilized to tune properties of ligands, which, in turn, can tune properties of transition metal complexes. Herein, the synthesis of a new phenylpyridine ligand 4-[(1E)-2-ferrocenylethenyl]-2-pyridinylphenyl (FcppyH) is reported with a 44% yield. The composition of this compound is verified by nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, infrared, cyclic voltammetry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystals of the title compound are formed in space group P21 with two unique molecules in the asymmetric unit. Differences in the mean-plane-to-mean-plane angles of the phenyl, pyridinyl, and ferrocenyl moieties distinguish the unique molecules, and enable C–H···π and C–H···N intermolecular interactions.
