Salen Ligands

Salen ligands are a class of tetradentate Schiff base ligands formed by the condensation of salicylaldehyde with ethylenediamine or its derivatives. The resulting ligand features two phenolic oxygen donors and two imine nitrogen donors arranged in an N₂O₂ coordination sphere. Chiral salen ligands are typically synthesized by using enantiomerically pure diamines, such as (R,R)- or (S,S)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, resulting in C₂-symmetric frameworks. These ligands are widely used in transition metal catalysis, particularly for asymmetric epoxidation, aziridination, and hydrolytic kinetic resolution. The most well-known example is Jacobsen’s catalyst, a manganese-salen complex used for asymmetric epoxidation of olefins. Salen ligands provide a rigid and well-defined chiral environment around the metal center, which is essential for high enantioselectivity. Their modular structure allows for systematic variation of steric and electronic properties through substitution on the aromatic rings or the diamine backbone. In addition to catalysis, salen ligands are applied in the construction of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), redox-active complexes, and functional materials. Their stability, ease of synthesis, and tunability have made them one of the most extensively studied ligand families in asymmetric synthesis.
