Derived from isoquinoline through hydrogenation, tetrahydroisoquinoline is an organic compound classified as a secondary amine and has the chemical formula C9H11N.
A variety of bioactive compounds and drugs contain the tetrahydroisoquinoline skeleton. This colorless, viscous liquid is capable of mixing with most organic solvents.
Several drugs contain the tetrahydroisoquinoline structure, including tubocurarine, which is among the quaternary ammonium muscle relaxants. Nomifensine and diclofensine are examples of drugs that are formulated with 4-substituted tetrahydroisoquinolines.
Tetrahydroisoquinoline, being a secondary amine, displays feeble basic characteristics and generates salts when reacted with strong acids. Similar to other secondary amines, oxidation of tetrahydroisoquinoline with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of selenium dioxide catalyst yields the corresponding nitrone.
