Chemistry Heterocyclic Building Blocks Thiadiazoles
Thiadiazoles belong to the group of azole compounds in the field of chemistry. These heterocyclic compounds have a five-membered structure and are composed of one sulfur atom and two nitrogen atoms.
Due to their two double bonds and sulfur lone pair, thiadiazoles possess an aromatic ring. Depending on the positions of the heteroatoms, there are four potential structures, which are structural isomers rather than tautomers since they cannot interconvert.
Thiadiazole can serve as a bio-isosteric component of the thiazole moiety found in third and fourth generation cephalosporins, thereby making it useful in the development of antibiotic formulations.
Thiadiazoles have a wide range of pharmacological properties, making them useful in the development of numerous potential drugs. These pharmacological activities encompass antitumor, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antitubercular, antipyretic, anticancer, CNS depressant, antischistosomal, and hypoglycemic effects.
