Heterocyclic Building Blocks
Thiophenes
A liquid without color and possessing a scent reminiscent of benzene, it demonstrates similar behavior to benzene in the majority of its reactions. Furan (C4H4O), selenophene (C4H4Se), and pyrrole (C4H4NH), which differ only in the heteroatom present in the ring, are among the compounds that are analogous to thiophene.
With a chemical formula of C4H4S, thiophene is a heterocyclic compound that contains a planar five-membered ring. Its extensive substitution reactions indicate that it is an aromatic compound.
Thiophenes, which are crucial heterocyclic compounds, find extensive applications as foundational units in numerous agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. It is common to substitute the benzene ring of a biologically active substance with a thiophene, while retaining its efficacy.
Thiophene, due to its aromaticity, displays different characteristics from typical sulfides, such as resistance to alkylation and oxidation of its sulfur atom.
