Tabersonine is an indole alkaloid mainly isolated from the Madagascar periwinkle. It can disrupt the aggregation of Aβ(1-42) and improve Aβ aggregation-induced cytotoxicity. Tabersonine also exhibits anti-inflammatory activity and can be used in the research of acute lung injury (ALI) / acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Synonyms: (–)-Tabersonine

Biological Activity

In Vitro:

Cell Line
Concentration Treated Time Description References
THP-1 cells 10 μM 3 h To inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Results showed that Tab inhibited IL-1β production in THP-1 cells. PMC10203108
Bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) 1 μM, 5 μM, 10 μM 30 min Tab inhibited NLRP3-mediated IL-1β production and suppressed the assembly of NLRP3 inflammasome, especially the interaction between NLRP3 and ASC. PMC10203108
HS633T cells 10 µM 24 h To investigate the antiviral and immunomodulatory effects of Tabersonine on ONNV infection. Results showed that Tabersonine significantly downregulated E1 and E2 gene expression and reduced viral progeny production. PMC10459185
rat calvarial osteoblasts 5 or 10 µM 24 h To evaluate the effect of Tabersonine on the viability of dexamethasone-treated osteoblasts, results showed Tabersonine restored cell viability PMC7486361

Animal Model
Administration Dosage Frequency Description References
C57BL/6J mice Peritonitis, acute lung injury, and sepsis models Gavage or intraperitoneal injection 10, 20, or 40 mg/kg Single administration Tab significantly ameliorated NLRP3-driven diseases, such as peritonitis, acute lung injury, and sepsis. PMC10203108
Female Sprague-Dawley rats Dexamethasone-induced osteoporosis model Intraperitoneal injection 20 or 40 mg/kg Once daily for 60 days To evaluate the effect of Tabersonine on bone histopathology and bone mineral density, results showed Tabersonine improved osteoporosis PMC7486361
