Hydrolysis: Ethyl benzoate can undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water and an acid or a base. In an acidic environment, it can be hydrolyzed back to benzoic acid and ethanol: C6H5COOC2H5 + H2O + H+ → C6H5COOH + C2H5OH
In a basic environment, the reaction forms benzoate ions and ethanol: C6H5COOC2H5 + OH- → C6H5COO- + C2H5OH
Reduction: Phenol can be reduced to form cyclohexanone or cyclohexanol using reducing agents.
