Chemistry Organic Building Blocks Amides
In the realm of organic chemistry, an amide, which is also referred to as an organic amide or carboxamide, is a chemical compound characterized by the general formula R−C(=O)−NR′R″, where R, R', and R″ can denote various groups, typically organic groups or hydrogen atoms.
Amides are widely distributed in nature and in human-made materials. Peptides, which are essential components of many biological macromolecules, are composed of amide bonds that link individual amino acids together. Similarly, certain synthetic polymers also utilize amide bonds as a key structural motif.
Amides can undergo hydrolysis in both strong acidic and hot alkaline conditions. Under acidic conditions, the amide bond is cleaved to form a carboxylic acid and an ammonium ion. On the other hand, basic hydrolysis of amides results in the formation of a carboxylate ion and ammonia.
Amides can be synthesized through the coupling of a carboxylic acid with an amine.
