Chemistry Organic Building Blocks Sulfonic Acids
Organic sulfonic acids, also known as sulphonic acids, are a type of organosulfur compound that can be represented by the general formula R−S(=O)2−OH, where R is an alkyl or aryl group in the organic domain, and the S(=O)2(OH) group is a sulfonyl hydroxide moiety. The sulfo group is another term used to refer to this substituent.
Sulfonic acid, which can also be spelled sulphonic, is a type of organic acid that contains sulfur and can be represented by the general formula RSO3H, where R represents an organic group that combines with sulfur.
Among organosulfur compounds, sulfonic acids are considered to be of great significance. This is because the inclusion of sulfonic acid groups in a compound can significantly increase its solubility in water.
