Chiral Bis-nitrogen Ligands

Chiral bis-nitrogen ligands are bidentate ligands containing two nitrogen donor atoms and a chiral backbone, which enables them to coordinate simultaneously to a metal center while imparting asymmetry. Typical examples include chiral diamines, diimines, and derivatives of bipyridine or phenanthroline with chiral substituents. These ligands are widely employed in asymmetric catalysis due to their ability to induce enantioselectivity in various transformations. Their two nitrogen atoms often form stable five- or six-membered chelate rings with transition metals, which improves the stability and activity of the resulting complexes. Chiral bis-nitrogen ligands are commonly used in reactions such as asymmetric hydrogenation, cyclopropanation, and epoxidation. For instance, chiral bis-imine–metal complexes have shown high enantioselectivity in Diels–Alder and Michael addition reactions. Their modularity allows for precise tuning of both steric and electronic environments around the metal center. Moreover, they are often used in the development of green and sustainable processes due to their ability to improve catalyst efficiency and reduce the need for stoichiometric reagents. In addition to catalysis, these ligands play a role in chiral recognition, supramolecular chemistry, and coordination-driven self-assembly.
