Asparagine, represented by the symbol Asn or N, is an α-amino acid essential for protein biosynthesis. It consists of an α-amino group, an α-carboxylic acid group, and a side chain carboxamide, which classifies it as a polar aliphatic amino acid under physiological pH conditions. The normal development of the brain relies on the presence of asparagine synthetase. Additionally, asparagine plays a role in protein synthesis during the replication of poxviruses. The process of adding N-acetylglucosamine to asparagine is facilitated by oligosaccharyltransferase enzymes located in the endoplasmic reticulum. This glycosylation process contributes to protein structure and function. Asparagine is encoded by the codons AAU and AAC.
