HGF (Hepatocyte Growth Factor) belongs to the scatter factor family and consists of α and β chains that need to be cleaved into an active form. It is primarily expressed in the liver but also found in other tissues. By binding to its receptor MET, HGF activates signaling pathways including RAS/MAPK and PI3K/AKT, promoting cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. HGF expression is particularly important in tissue repair. Dysregulation or mutations of its gene can lead to the development of diseases such as cancer.
