IBAT (Intestinal Bile Acid Transporter), also known as ASBT (Apical Sodium-dependent Bile Acid Transporter), is a member of the SLC10A family. It consists of multiple transmembrane domains and is mainly located on the cell membrane of intestinal epithelial cells. IBAT is involved in the reabsorption of bile acids by transporting them from the intestinal lumen into the intestinal epithelial cells, thus maintaining the enterohepatic circulation of bile acids. The expression of IBAT is tissue- and cell-specific, and mutations or dysregulation of its gene are associated with various diseases, including cholestatic liver diseases, intestinal disorders, and bile acid-related disorders.
