General procedure for the synthesis of isoindolo[1,2-a]isoquinolines General procedure: To a stirred solution of 2-arylethanamine 1 (0.5 mmol) and methyl 2-acyl benzoate 2 (0.5 mmol) in DCE (5 mL) at 0 °C was added TFA (4.0 mmol). The reaction was heated at 70 °C until completion (as monitored by TLC) and cooled. The reaction was quenched with 10% NaOH solution (5 mL). The separated aqueous phase was extracted with DCM (3 x 10 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered, and then concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel to afford 3a-s.
