The reaction mixture was treated with methanesulfonyl chloride (0.630 mL, 8.139mmol), and stirred for additional 24 hr at the same temperature. Then, water was added to the reaction mixture, followed by extraction with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution, dried with anhydrous MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was chromatographed (Si02, 24 g cartridge; ethyl acetate / hexane = 0 % to 30 %) to give N(3-acetylphenyl)methanesulfonamide as white solid (0.750 g, 47.5 %).
