With formaldehyd In toluene for 48h; Heating / reflux; 1 Comparative Example 1 Comparative Example 1 Reaction of a 2-Hydroxy-4-alkoxyphenyl-containing Triazine with Diallylamine and Excess aqueous Formaldehyde To a 2-neck flask equipped with a reflux condenser, an argon inlet, a magnetic stirring bar and a glass stopper was introduced 5.09 g of the 2-hydroxy-4-octyloxyphenyl-containing triazine as depicted above, UV-1164, 20 ML toluene, 1.3 ML diallylamine and 2.4 ML of 36% aqueous formaldehyde solution.. The reaction mixture was allowed to react at reflux temperature for 2 days.. The heating was discontinued and the reaction mixture analyzed by TLC (thin layer chromatography) which showed only unreacted 2-hydroxy-4-octyloxyphenyl-containing triazine and no new product spots, indicating that almost no reaction took place. This example demonstrates that, for the reactions of the present invention, 2-hydroxy-4-alkoxyphenyl-containing triazines are not a suitable reactant.. Thus, it is important to have 2,4-dihydroxyphenyl-substituted triazines as a reactant.
