A suspension of 1-amino-9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene-2-carboxylic acid (14) (0.15 g, 0.56 mmol) in dry DMF (3.8 mL) was heated at 50 °C until a clear solution was obtained. Bromine (0.137 mL, 2.26 mmol) was then slowly added, and the reaction was completed after 10 min (as monitored by TLC). A solution of NaHSO3 (0.28 g) dissolved in demineralized water (3 mL) was added to the reaction mixture, which was subsequently extracted with ethyl acetate (3 75 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (30 mL), and dried over MgSO4.
