SKQ1 is a mitochondria-targeted plastoquinone antioxidant which can prevent the deleterious effect of Aβ on LTP through intraperitoneal injection at very low concentrations (250 nmol/kg body weight). It is considered as a promising candidate for the treatment of early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

Synonyms: SKQ1; SKQ1 (bromide)

Biological Activity

In Vitro:

Cell Line
Concentration Treated Time Description References
Human NP cells 20 nM 2 h pretreatment followed by 36 h Alleviated AGEs-induced mitochondrial ROS generation and apoptosis PMC6139007
Human conjunctival epithelial (HCjE) cells ≤300 nM 24 or 48 hours SkQ1 significantly suppressed PGE2 production in HCjE cells, showing dose- and time-dependent effects. PMC6393248
Human corneal limbus epithelial (HCLE) cells 50 nM 4-12 hours SkQ1 significantly enhanced wound healing in HCLE cells by promoting cell proliferation and migration. PMC6393248

In Vivo:

Species
Animal Model
Administration Dosage Frequency Description References
Mice Inducible Slc4a11 knockout mouse model Eye drop administration 1.5 µM Three times daily for 14 days Visomitin significantly slowed the increase in corneal thickness, with concomitant decreased stromal lactate retention, improved barrier function, reduced Src activation and Cldn1 phosphorylation, and rescued MCT2 and MCT4 expression. PMC10253072
Sprague-Dawley rats 40% fixed-blood-loss hemorrhagic shock model Intraperitoneal injection 1μM/kg Single dose immediately after shock surgery, observed for 12 hours SkQ1 attenuated HS-induced myocardial ROS increase, protected myocardial mitochondrial ultrastructure, reduced peripheral blood mtDNA release, reversed 56.5% of inflammation-related gene expression, and decreased TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1 protein levels PMC9709459
ICR mice Subcutaneous abscess model Subcutaneous injection 20 mg/kg Single dose, lasting 24 hours To evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of Visomitin against MRSA ATCC 43,300 in vivo, results showed that Visomitin significantly reduced bacterial loads and attenuated skin damage. PMC11492638

Dissolving Methods
Please choose the appropriate dissolution scheme according to your animal administration guide. For the following dissolution schemes, clear stock solution should be prepared according to in vitro experiments, and then cosolvent should be added in turn:

in order to ensure the reliability of the experimental results, the clarified stock solution can be properly preserved according to the storage conditions; The working fluid for in vivo experiment is recommended to be prepared now and used on the same day;

The percentage shown in front of the following solvent refers to the volume ratio of the solvent in the final solution; If precipitation or precipitation occurs in the preparation process, it can be assisted by heating and/or ultrasound.
