Organic Field-Effect Transistor (OFET) Materials

Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are electronic devices based on organic semiconductor materials, featuring core functional layers composed of p-type or n-type organic semiconductors, dielectric layers, and electrodes. Compared to their inorganic counterparts, OFETs offer unique advantages such as tunable molecular structures, solution processability (e.g., spin-coating, inkjet printing), mechanical flexibility (with bending radii below 1 mm), and low-temperature fabrication (<150 °C), making them ideal for flexible electronics, biosensors, wearable devices, and large-area manufacturing. Representative material systems include: (1) Small-molecule semiconductors (e.g., pentacene, rubrene, C60 derivatives), which possess high crystallinity and can achieve carrier mobility of 10–40 cm²/V·s; (2) Polymer semiconductors (e.g., P3HT, DPP-based copolymers, IDT-BT), whose film morphology and charge transport characteristics can be tuned through side-chain engineering and backbone modification; (3) Emerging non-fullerene acceptors (e.g., Y6 derivatives), which enable balanced hole and electron mobility in ambipolar operation. Performance enhancements are driven by molecular engineering (e.g., fluorinated or alkyl side chains to strengthen intermolecular interactions), interface engineering (e.g., self-assembled monolayers to reduce trap states on dielectrics), and innovations in device architecture (e.g., top- or bottom-gate configurations). Current research focuses on improving environmental stability, minimizing interfacial defect density, developing ambipolar systems, and achieving high on/off ratios with low subthreshold swing. Although laboratory prototypes have achieved mobilities comparable to amorphous silicon, challenges such as batch-to-batch consistency, long-term operational stability, and scalable fabrication remain critical barriers to industrial adoption. Future directions encompass machine learning-guided molecular design, flexible substrate-device integration, and bioresorbable OFET systems.
