91% With lithium aluminium tetrahydride; In diethyl ether; at 0 - 20℃; for 2h; 1-hydroxymethyl-2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexa-1,3-diene (safranol, 4). To a suspension of 320 mg (8.32 mmol, 2.5 equiv.) of lithium aluminium hydride in dry diethyl ether (30 mL) externally cooled 0C was slowly added a solution of <strong>[116-26-7]safranal</strong> 1 (500 mg, 3.33 mmol) in of diethyl ether (20 mL). After stirring for 1h at 0C and 1h at room temperature, the reaction was quenched carefully with water and filtrated, extracted with diethyl ether (3×20 mL) and dried (MgSO4). After filtration and evaporation, safranol (4) (460 mg, 91%) was obtained as colorless oil that was directly used for further reactions.
