64.5% | 1 Production of 2-(4-bromomethylphenyl)pyridine Hydrochloride EXAMPLE 1 Production of 2-(4-bromomethylphenyl)pyridine Hydrochloride In a 100 ml four neck flask were placed 2-(4-tolyl)pyridine hydrochloride (5.0 g, 24.3 mmol) and chlorobenzene (15 ml), and bromine (8.5 g, 53.2 mmol) was added dropwise over 12 hours while heating the mixture to 110-120° C. The mixture was stirred with heating at a temperature in the above-mentioned range for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (hereinafter abbreviated as HPLC). As a result, 2-(4-bromomethylphenyl)pyridine was confirmed to have been produced in a 64.5% yield. The reaction mixture was cooled to allow precipitation of the crystals, which were collected by filtration and washed with a small amount of cold methanol. From the 1 H-NMR analysis, the compound was found to be 2-(4-bromomethylphenyl)pyridine hydrochloride.
