27% 3,5-Dichloro-4-hydroxy-benzoic (400 mg, 1.93 mmol) was stirred in tetrahydrofuran(5 mL) with 40 percent aqueous n-tetrabutyl phosphonium hydroxide (3.16 mL, 3.86 mmol) at O0C for 5 mins and iodoethane (219 muL, 1.93 mmol) added. The reaction mixture was left to warm to room temperature and stirred for 6 h. The solution was concentrated in vacuo and the remaining residue acidified with concentrated hydrochloric acid to give a white suspension. The mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (3 x 25 mL) and the combined organic phases washed with saturated brine. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to give a crude mixture which was purified by column chromatography eluting with methanol/dichloromethane (0percent to 5percent) to give S.delta-dichlorc^-ethoxy-benzoic acid (120 mg, 27percent) as a white powder. 1H NMR (CDCI3, 400 MHz) delta 1.47 (t, 3H, J = 6.8 Hz, CH3), 4.17 (q, 2H, J = 7.1 Hz, CH2).
