YieldReaction ConditionsOperation in experiment
93% General procedure: A magnetically stirred solution of the 2-arylindole (1 mmol) in DMF (3 mL) was cooled to 0 C and treated with powdered KOH (0.084 g, 1.5 mmol). Stirring continued for 15 minutes at 0 C, when MeI (0.074 mL, 1.2 mmol) was added at once and the solution was allowed to come to room temperature while kept under stirring for 6 h. At the end of the reaction, water (10 mL) was added and the reaction products were extracted with EtOAc (3 × 10 mL). The combined organic phases were successively washed with water (2 × 10 mL) and brine (10 mL), dried over MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification of the residue by column chromatography on silica gel eluted with hexane afforded the pure products.
