27% With sodium hydride; In tetrahydrofuran; mineral oil; at 0℃; for 48h;Reflux; Inert atmosphere; Schlenk technique; General procedure: To a 500 mL two-neck round bottom flask were added sodium hydride (60% in mineral oil, 5.0 g, 125 mmol) and then anhydrous THF (200 mL). This mixture was cooled to 0 C, and then methyl 4-chlorobenzoate (55 mmol) and 4’-chloroacetophenone (50 mmol) were added. The suspension was heated to reux under nitrogen for 48 h. After cooled down to room temperature, the mixture was filtered through Celite and washed once with ethanol. The filtrate was treated with a mixture of ether and dilute hydrochloric acid. The ether phase was separated and washed three times with brine and dried on magnesium sulfate. After removal of the ether, the residue was recrystallized by ethanol to give pure products as white or light-yellow solids. Yield 47%.
