Stage #1: at 60℃;
Stage #2: With water; citric acid In ethyl acetate
Part B. 3-fluoro-4-formyl-benzoic acid tert-butyl ester.; The ester from Part A (7.5 mmol) was dissolved in CCl4 (40 mL) and N-bromosuccinimide (3.34 g, 18.8 mmol) and benzoyl peroxide (0.36 g, 1.5 mmol) were added. The resulting mixture was stirred at reflux overnight. After cooling to rt, the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was diluted with EtOAc and washed with water, sat'd NaHCO3, and brine, then dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The crude product mixture was dissolved in hexane and insolubles filtered off. Filtrate was evaporated to give the crude dibromide as a light yellow oil (2.5 g). This material was taken up in morpholine (30 mL) and stirred at 60° C. overnight. Excess morpholine was partially removed under reduced pressure then the residue was diluted with EtOAc, washed repeatedly with 5percent citric acid until the aqueous layer remained at pH=4. The organic layer was then washed with brine and dried over Na2SO4, filtered and evaporated. Flash chromatography on silica gel provided the aldehyde as a white solid.
