With triethylamine; EXAMPLE 12 5-Chloro-1,3-benzoxazol-2-amine Anhydrous copper (II) sulfate (1.1 to 10 equivalents, preferably 1.1 equivalents) and triethylamine (1.0 to 10 equivalents, preferably 1.0 equivalents) are added to a solution of N-(5-chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl)thiourea (1 equivalent) in an organic solvent, for example tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, or acetonitrile, and the mixture is stirred, between about 20 C. and 100 C., until the formation of the benzoxazole is complete. The reaction is filtered through a pad of diatomaceous earth, washed with solvent, and the combined filtrate is washed with 10% v/v aqueous ammonium hydroxide, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 5-chloro-1,3-benzoxazol-2-amine.
