Trans-2(3,5-difluorophenyl) vinyl boronicacid pinacol ester (3FV), potassium carbonate (K2CO3), and tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) (Pd(PPh3)4) were supplied fromSigma-Aldrich (USA). To synthesize EHD3FV, 2Br-EHD (0.15 mmol),3FV (0.3 mmol), K2CO3 (1 M), and Pd(PPh3)4 (0.5 mol%) were added toa flat bottom three-necked flask in a glove box (nitrogen environment).The flask was flushed with argon gas. Next, THF (9 mL) and deionizedwater (3 mL) were added to the mixture in the flask, followed by degassingwith argon. The coupling reaction was carried out by heating at70 C for 24 h. To terminate the reaction, the flask was cooled down toroom temperature and the reacted mixture was dropped into an excessamount of methanol to obtain a solid precipitate. The unreactedstarting materials were washed off and then the final precipitates weresubjected to sequential processes of centrifugation and filtration (poresize=1 mum). The resulting solids were dried in vacuum for>24 h. Thedried solid, EHD3FV, showed a deep-purple color. Yield=95.4%.Mp=284-285 C. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CHCl3, ppm) delta=0.88 (H6, 6,J=7.63 Hz), 0.91 (H6, 5, J=7.33 Hz), 1.30 (H4, 4, J=5.84 Hz), 1.33(H4, 4, J=2.74 Hz), 1.39 (H4, 4, J=6.06 Hz) 1.44 (H4, 3,J=6.71 Hz), 1.92 (H2, 2, J=5.48 Hz), 4.05 (H4, 1, J=7.96 Hz), 6.85(H2, f, J=6.37 Hz), 6.90 (H4, e, J=6.40 Hz), 7.12 (H2, d,J=6.40 Hz), 7.22 (H2, c, J=4.25 Hz), 7.27 (H2, b, J=6.25 Hz), 7.52(H2, a, J=6.49 Hz) (see Fig. S1); 13C NMR (500 MHz, CHCl3, ppm)delta=10.6 (H6, 8), 14.6 (H6, 7), 23.1 (H4, 6), 23.7 (H4, 5), 28.6 (H4, 4),30.3 (H4, 3), 39.3 (H2, 2), 46.0 (H4, 1), 104.5 (C2, k), 111.8 (C4, j),122.4 (C2, i), 127.7 (C2, h), 128.2 (C2, g), 128.7 (C2, f), 136.5 (C2, e),139.5 (C2, d), 147.8 (C2, c), 161.5 (C4, b), 163.5 (C2, a) (see Fig. S2).UV-vis (CHCl3, nm) lambdamax=600.
