YieldReaction ConditionsOperation in experiment
84% With sodium hydride; In tetrahydrofuran;Reflux; To a suspension of [54117-37-2]9-benzyl-9H-carbazole-3-carbaldehyde (0.65 g, 2.28 mmol) and (naphthalen-2-ylmethyl)triphenylphosphonium chloride 6 (1 g, 2.28 mmol) in 100 mL dry THF was added sodiumhydride (1 g, 41.67 mmol). The solution was refluxed overnight. During reflux, the color changedfrom white to light yellow and orange. The residue was quenched with water. The solution wasextracted several times with DCM, the organic phases were combined, dried over magnesiumsulfate and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. Addition of ethanol precipitated a whitesolid that was filtered off, washed with cold ethanol and dried under vacuum (784 mg, 84% yield).
