The resulting suspension was heated to boiling for 2 days. Upon completion, the reaction mixture was cooled, filtered and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was separated and washed with water and brine and then dried to give a crude product that was further purified by column chromatography using hexanes:ethyl acetate (9:1) as eluant to furnish the off-white solid product (3.14 g, 87% yield). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3): delta 7.19 (d, 4H, J=8.54 Hz), 7.15 (d, 4H, J=8.54 Hz), 6.93 (d, 4H, J=8.78 Hz), 6.86 (d, 4H, J=8.78 Hz), 2.43 (s, 6H), 1.27 (s, 18H), 1.24 (s, 18H). 13C NMR (125.68 MHz, CDCl3): delta 148.7, 148.6, 145.3, 145.2, 142.1, 135.8, 134.6, 127.8, 127.0, 126.1, 125.9, 34.53, 34.49, 31.5, 21.4. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra for 1,2,3,4-tetra(4'-t-butylphenylthio)-5,6-dimethylbenzene and the compound structure are shown in FIGS. 10A & B.
