66% With lithium aluminium tetrahydride; In tetrahydrofuran; at 5 - 20℃;Inert atmosphere; Schlenk technique; General procedure: Lithium aluminum hydride (0.95 g, 25 mmol) was suspended in with THF (20 mL)and the mixture was cooled to 5 . The solution of mandelic acid (10 mmol) in THF (20 mL) was added dropwise. After the addition, the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature. After the complete conversion of mandelic acid,the reaction was quenched with a mixture of water and THF, and then 15% aqueous sodium hydroxide (5 mL)was added. The solid was removed by filtration with celite, and the filtrate was extracted with Et2O (30 mL×3).The combined organic phase was dried over anhydrous MgSO4. After removing the solvent, product wasobtained by recrystallization with dichloromethane
