YieldReaction ConditionsOperation in experiment
80% A suspension of ethyl-3-pyridylacetate (5.0 g, 30 RNMOL) and platinum oxide (500 mg), in acidic ethanol (200 ML of 1% HCl/EtOH) was placed on a parr shaker and treated with hydrogen at 50 psi for 15 hours. The reaction was then flushed with nitrogen, the catalyst filtered off (plug of Celite), and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure to yield 5.86 g (100%) of a white solid. The material was then dissolved in dichloromethane (200 ml) and treated with diisopropyl ethylamine (5. 25 ml, 30.26 mmol) and di-tert-butyl-dicarbonate (7.00 g, 31.77 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The solution was washed with IN HCI (100 ml), saturated sodium bicarbonate (100 ml), brine (100 ml), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent evaporated at reduced pressure to yield 7.5 g (97%) of the crude product as a yellow oil. Purification was done by MPLC (eluant: 10% ethyl acetate/hexane) to give 6.22 g (80%) of the pure desired product.
