YieldReaction ConditionsOperation in experiment
90% 4-Ethyl-1-naphthoic acid (15). A mixture of 3.70 g (10.5 mmol) of the above diphenylamide, 23.2 g of KOH and 154 mL of diethylene glycol was heated at reflux for 8 h. The reaction mixture was cooled, diluted with 1.13 L of water and the precipitated solids filtered off. The filtrate was acidified with conc. HCl until precipitation was complete. The solid was collected and dried to give 1.90 g (90%) of acid 15: m.p. 125-127 C.
