No.30 SOCl2 (2.93 mL, 40.4 mmol) was added dropwise with stirring. The mixture was heated gently for 4 h at 70C., and then cooled. A vacuum was applied, and the bath temperature was slowly increased to 45C. to afford No.93 1-(chloromethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole in 81% yield (0.960 g, 8.21 mmol) as a white solid.

The combined organic layers was washed with H2O (50 mL) & brine solution (50 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated in rotavapor under vacuum to yield 1-(chloromethyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole (0.570 g, 48%) as brown liquid.
