YieldReaction ConditionsOperation in experiment
75% To a solution of1,10-phenanthrolin-2(1H)-one (0.98 g, 5 mmol) in dry DMF(20 mL) was added NaH (0.15 g, 6.3 mmol). After ceasingevolution of H2gas, the resulting reaction mixture was heatedat 100C for 30 min, to which was added [7089-68-1]2-chloro-1,10-phenanthroline (1.78 g, 5.5 mmol) in portions. Reaction mix-ture was refluxed for 8 h, then cooled to room temperature. Resulting mixture was poured to water (50 mL) and extractedwith CH2Cl2 (30 mL ×3). Evaporation of solvent affordedsolid which was chromatographed on silica gel eluting withEtOAc. The latter fraction (Rf = 0.45, EtOAc) afforded whiteneedles (1.40 g, 75percent): mp 58?60C.1H NMR (CDCl3,500 MHz)delta8.74 (dd, 2H,J= 4.6, 1.6 Hz, H9), 8.06 (dd, 2H,J= 8.4, 1.6 Hz, H7), 7.73 (d, 2H,J= 9.6 Hz, H4), 7.46 (d,2H,J= 8.6 Hz, H5/H6), 7.42 (dd, 2H,J= 8.4, 4.6 Hz, H8),7.38 (dd, 2HJ= 8.6 Hz, H6/H5), 6.67 (d,J= 9.6 Hz, H3).13C NMR (CDCl3, 125 MHz) delta158.3, 149.4, 145.8, 145.3,137.5, 136.1, 129.5, 126.6, 122.1, 121.4, 120.9, 109.2. MS(ESI) calcd for C24H14N4O[M+H]+374.12, found 374.6.Anal calcd for C24H14N4O C, 76.99; H, 3.77; N, 14.96.Found C, 77.04; H, 3.77; N, 14.91. The fraction of EtOAc:CH3OH (19:1) afforded3a(Rf = 0.15, 0.14 g, 7percent), of whichthe spectral data were identical to the literature value.
