2-chloro-6-dimethylaminobenzothiazole (40) (Shown Below) To a solution of (29) (0.1 mmol, 18.5 mg) in 1 ml dichloroethane was added 90 mul 37% formaldehyde, followed by 63.6 mg sodium triacetoxyborohydride, and 12 mul acetic acid. After 2 h, the solution was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extracts were washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate, and the solvent removed by rotary evaporation. The crude material (21 mg) contained a small amount of monomethylated product, but was sufficiently pure to use directly in the next step. 1H-NMR (CDCl3): delta 7.75 (d, 1H, J=9.2 Hz), 6.95 (d, 1H, J=2.4 Hz), 6.90 (dd, 1H, J=2.4, 9.2 Hz), 3.02 (s, 6H).
