With trifluoroacetic acid; In dichloromethane; ethyl acetate; v) tert-Butyl (3S)-3-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonylamino)-2-oxoperhydroazepine-1-acetate (10.5 g) was dissolved in dichloromethane (30 ml) and trifluoroacetic acid (20 ml) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 18 hours. Dichloromethane (100 ml) was added and the reaction mixture was washed with water (4*100 ml), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated. The residue was purified by MPLC on silica eluding with 25% ethylacetate/dichloromethane, followed by ethyl acetate, to give an oil. Trituration with isohexane gave a white foam which was filtered and dred under vacuum at 60 C. to give (3S)-3-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonylamino)-2-oxoperhydroazepine-1-acetic acid (5.5 g); NMR (d6-DMSO): 1.4-1.95 (m, 1H), 3.15-3.4 (m, 1H), 3.55-3.7 (m, 1H), 3.9-4.2 (m, 2H), 4.25-4.45 (m, 2H), 7.15 (d, 1H), 7.25-7.45(m, 4H), 7.75 (m, 2H), 7.85 (d, 2H); mass spectrometry, m/e (ES-) 407.1 (M-H)-.
