61% With trifluorormethanesulfonic acid; In 1,2-dichloro-ethane; at 20℃; for 24h; General procedure: To a solution of the appropriate nitrile (0.31 mmol) in anhyd DCE (1 mL) was added TfOH (44 μL, 0.49 mmol) and GADA (47 μL, 0.46 mmol). After stirring at r.t. for 24 h, the reaction mixture was poured into H2O and adjusted to pH 8 with sat. aq NaHCO3, which was then extracted with CH2Cl2 (3 ×). The organic layers were combined and washed with H2O and brine, dried over anhyd Na2SO4, and concentrated in vacuo to give the product. The crude product was purified by a silica gel column (PE/EtOAc = 10:1-3:1, v/v), unless stated otherwise. The significant loss of product was due to the difficulty in isolation.
