22.3 g With aluminum oxide; at 220 - 232℃; for 66h; A 100 mL three-neck flask, equipped with an overhead stirrer, a Claisen head with a thermocouple and nitrogen inlet, and a short-path distillation apparatus was charged with 17.6 g 4-hexylresorcinol, 19.8 g nonylaniline, and 10.8 g basic alumina. The reaction was stirred at 220 C. for 41 h, then cooled. An additional 5.1 g basic alumina was added, and the reaction was stirred at 220 C. for 7 h. Temperature was increased to 232 C. for 18 h. The reaction mixture was taken up in ethyl acetate/hexanes and centrifuged. The supematant was filtered through diatomaceous earth, and solvent was removed by rotary evaporation. Unreacted starting material was removed by vacuum distillation to yield 22.3 g clear orange liquid.
