YieldReaction ConditionsOperation in experiment
With sodium hydroxide; In water; a) 5-Methylfurfural (10 g, 91 mmol) was added dropwise to 2N NaOH (200 mL) and the mixture was stirred for 30 min. A solution of acetaldehyde (8.0 g, 182 mmol) in water (20 mL) was added to the above mixture. After stirring for 3 h the mixture was extracted twice with ether and the combined ether extract was washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to give after distillation (collected bp 65-85C) 3-(5-methylfur-2-yl)-propenal (5.5 g).
